Having forged strategic co-production alliances for film and TV with Gaumont, Spain’s Planeta and Amor y Lujo, Colombia’s Fidelio, one of the quickest growing production houses in Latin America, has launched development on a Mexico and Romania-set crime drama.
Fidelio has initiated development on a series that calls for one in Latin America and another in Eastern Europe. Based on exhaustive research and publication, the show, whose development is being lead by Mauricio Leiva Cock, screenwriter of “Capital Roar” and scribe-helmer of movie “The Night of the Beast” has found an unusual partner: Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP). Rather than optioning the rights for its report, the companies have pacted longer-term synergies whereby the Project is actively involved in development of a scripted drama which will offer constant insight on the complexities of the organized crime world.
The yet-to-be-titled rambunctious story of the Riviera Maya Gang loks set to serve as a reminder to the viewer that life is often stranger than fiction.
Its story spans across the globe from Romania to the beaches of Mexico, involving family clans, betrayal, ATM fraud, and a lot of journalistic investigation. The series’ complexity underscores Fidelio’s growing ambitions.
“We know that this could potentially be a big show in the sense of scale. Our partners at the OCCRP want to make it trans-continental, for the story to be told from different perspectives,” Leiva-Cock told Variety.

Production has begun on La Cabeza de Joaquín Murrieta, a new action-packed Amazon Original series, co-created by Mauricio Leiva-Cock and episodes written by David Figueroa García, Associate Produced by Fidelio.
The series is a Western set along the Mexico-US border in 1851, “a period fueled by greed, anger, and xenophobia when an all-out war is waged,” as Amazon described in a statement to the press. The show will follow the adventures of Joaquín Murrieta, a notorious and legendary outlaw hailing from Sonora, Mexico who is often referred to as the Robin Hood of the West, and the character of Carrillo, as they unite to face a common enemy.
“For a long time we have wanted to make a Western told from our Latin American perspective, and the fact that Amazon Prime Video has bet on this series and has joined us on this adventure is a dream come true,” said Leiva-Cock in a joint statement with series co-creator Ramírez Schrempp of Dynamo. Leiva-Cock and Schrempp typify the series as “a story of Mexican identity where current issues of migration, race, and discrimination are explored, under a genre that has seldom been explored in our region.”

In its latest international collaboration, Fidelio partner Mauricio Leiva Cock is partnering with Esra Saydam, founder of Karlakum Film, to adapt Murat Menteş’ best seller “Double’s Dilemma” into an eight-episode TV series.
The show follows an albino orphan named Nuh Tufan who confidently moves through Istanbul’s underworld as the leader of the small, yet successful criminal organization known as Black M-Agency. When his best friend invents a machine that can print hyper realistic masks that allow the wearer to look like anyone they want, the eyes of the mafia and the streets of Istanbul will start paying attention to what the two friends can do with such revolutionary tech.
This high-end concept thriller looks set to drive into dark comedy and sci-fi, always maintaining a social commentary in the line of “Mr. Robot” or “Money Heist.” The complex structure of Menteş’ novel allows the co-creators to add flair with Gondry-esque imagery and expand on its rich lore for following seasons.
Above all else, the alliance marks a meeting of independent productions from southern regions of the world that stress the great value that lies in collaboration, both in terms of production and in introducing new voices to the international market.
“With other developing countries there is a thematic affinity and we can together improve our narratives” said Leiva-Cock
